OBITUARY.
MB E. S. HAEIrKY. We regret to record the*'death of M« Edward iteane Hariey, "F.1.A.N.Z., whicl. occurred at the residence of his son-in-law - iMr J. D.- Milton, on Sunday. The deceased gentleman was well known and respected in the citT, and his death -will be much mourned. The late Mr Harley waa born in Leicester, England, in 1839, and armed in Melbourne in 1857. He remained in. the employ of - Messrs Miles and Company till 1864 when he waa transferred to the Christchurch office of ths firm, in which he wfis specially connected as accountant for the estates of the Messrs Rhodes Brothers. On leaving Messrs Miles And Company he was for some time associated in business with Mr 'I J. Maling. He afterwards became local manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, and retired from tiiat position owing to illhealth in 1895. After'visiting _ngland. Mr Harley resumed business on his owr -•count as accountant, auditor, and product broker, in Hereford street. As ehowing the high opinion which the commercial community held of his ability, it may be '. mentioned" that he was auditor for the i Ohri-chiirch Oas Company, the Lvttel[ton Gas' Company, the New Zealand Shipping Company, Limited. Ward and t-0.. i Limited. Manning and Co., Limited, and th* Permanent Investment and Loan Association, Canterbury- n . . , , A few years after coming to Ghnstcnurcn \Jr Harlc'v returned to Melbourne and married a lady with whom' he had long teen aTOUiiin-d*, whom he now leaves a widow with four sons aifd four daughters. Tbe late Mr Harley was a prominent ■cricketer in his younger days, and he played for Canterbury against Otago in 1865, 1866/ and 1809. It was in bowling that h* proved of mnji s?n-it-e to the team,.;!? in the three mitches he took twelve wickets iat » co-fc of 94 runs, his best performance > being five.wickets for 27 runs in 1866. He ! met with cons:.d*rab"e success as an ulli round ptHV-r in 'matches, and aftei living up'pn active part in the game he iacud'as umpire in several important l fixtures.
