NEW BRIGHTON.

The fortnightly iueeung of the New Brighton .Borough Council was held on Monday night. present—Tne Mayor (Mr 0. H. w'inny), and Councillors Bellamy, LigiHbouy, Musgrave, Hindle, Glanville, and Macrarlane. Correspondence was read from tho Christchurch City Council enclosing a cheque for £13 /a 4d, subsidy and refund in connection with the expenditure on* the Infectious Diseases Hospital. Mr E. Sefton wrote asking the Counoil to erect protective works on the portion nf the island facing the river, so as to prevent flooding during the winter months. Referred to the Works Committee for favourable consideration. The Town Clerk reported that a portion of the Esplanade at the end of Sea View Road bad been reformed and thoroughly rolled, and detailed other works carried out in the borough. .The Finance Committee reported receipts as follows:—Rates £284 2s, Government subsidy and City Counoil refund £13 7s 4d, small items £1 10s. The credit balance at the bank on the General Account was £101 7s 6d, and the Committee recommended payment of accounts totalling £62 Os 3d. The Committee also recommended that certain applications for remission of rates be acceeded to. The report was adopted.' On the suggestion of the Mayor, a committee, consisting of Councillors Checkley. Macfariane, Bellamy, Glanville, and the Mayor, waa set up to consider the re-naming of the streets in the borough. The Mayor said that if the reports were correct, the Tramway Board was not dealing fairly with the public or with the Electrical Construction Company, in regard to the construction of the Brighton tramway, and considering that the Board had let the contract many months ago, it was exceedingly strange Jthat the Board did not know in what order the works were to be carried out. The Board had not yet replied to the Council's letter. It was decided to write to the Board asking at what date the electric trains would be running to New Brighton. The Mayor Baid that the.collection of the dog tax in the borough had been OT_atisfactc*y. and it was decided to appoint the Town Clerk Registrar for the coming year. WOOLSTON. The regular meeting of the Council was held on 9th inst. Present—The Mayor, Crs. Gongh, Hayes, Thomas, Woodhouse, Beaumont, Spreadbury, Champ, and Henley. Cr. Moore sent an apology for his absence. ; The Works Committee reported that it was making enquiries as to the cost of a suitable safe for the Council's requirements. They had oon_dared plan of street oonneoting Park street with Mr Schauman's new street, and had approved of grade, and recommended the Council to form the portion recently acquired, and construct about three.chains of channelling to complete one grade; also to fence Mr St. Quintin's boundary as agreed. Committee further recommended that tenders be called for the supply of metal and soreeningj. The report was adopted. The Finaooo Committee reported. receipts since last meeting amounting to £641 6k Id;.the credit balance being £265 10s od;. Accounts amounting to £247 14s 4d were passed for payment. The Council passed a vote of sympathy with Cr. Wocdjiouse on the recent death of his wife. The Mayor stated that he attended a meeting of delegates re proposed pounds at which the site of the smallpox hospital reserve in Bromley had been selected as the most convenient for this and tlie (surrounding districts. The Council approved of the site. The, Roads Department forwarded, objections from the Heathcote Road Board and Tramway Board to the allocation of the cost of the now Heathcote bridge, and advised that a commission would be sat up to deal with the matter. The olerk was instructed to give notice to Messrs Peez, Gaason, and Palmer to abate a nuisance caused by stagnant water on their properties within fourteen days,, and failing their complying with the notice, the clerk was authorised to do the work, and charge the owners therefor. , The Mayer advised that he had re; oeived a cheque from Mr J. Scott for £4 4s, which Mr Scott asked might bo applied to lacal objects. It was decided to apply £2 2s towards gates for Coronation Beth, £1' la to the Woolston Band, and £1 Is to the Library. The clerk was instructed to write and thank Mr Scott for bis donation.
