MR SAMUEL BBALEY. » News has been received of the death i n England.: on May Bth of Mr Samuel- ; Bealey, 8.A., who was elected Superintendent of Canterbury undor Pjpvmcial Institutions in 1863. Mr 'Bealey was - ' born in Lancashire . in 1821. H© entered -, * Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1851, and- sailed in the same' year for Canterbury. . In conjunction wih his bro-/ f v ther, the late Mr John Bealey, ho purchased 1000 acres of land, entering mtd , pastora 1 pursuits. On - the granting of representative institutions by tho pass-* ins of the Constitution Act m 1862 th© elections for. the Provincial.' Council took place and Mr Samuel Bealey, Mr Thomas Cass, Chief Surveyor, and sAr Richard 'Packer were elected for Christchurdh. Mr Bealey continued to ' , represent the city in the Provincial Council until 1863, when, he was returned unopposed as Superintendent in succession to Mr William Sefton, Moorhouse, who had ; resigned. The harbour works at Lyttelton; were prom- * inent amongst the public works undertaken during Mr Benley'fl term, of office, .and to the Construction of these ho devoted considerable/time and attention. An able report drawn up "by a commission of engineers' and masters of vessels recommended the formation of a breakwater. This proposal was strongly supported by Mr Bealey. A considerable extension of the Southern Railway was also undertaken during Mr Bealey's Superintendency.. On the - completion of his term of office he retired into private life, and subsequently for the purpose'of educating his family, returned, to England, where he resided up to the time of his death.
