STREET NOMENCLATURE.
■ ■ . . —, —♦- -. OBJECTIONS TO ALTERATIONS. A special meeting of the City Council was held on Monday night, for the purpose of confirming the Council's by-laws regarding the alteration of tho names; of. a number of streets. Several deputations wailed on the Council, objecting, to tho altiwstions in certain cases Mr H. Langford and two others waited on the Council and objected io London street reing altered to; Newcastle .street. .Be said that there;was no other street of the same' /name under the Council's jurisdiction; it was part of the thoroughfare between Christchurch and 'Kaiapoi and -other northern towns, and if its name were altered it would lead to confusion; many business men in the street had . advertisements in the newspapers and in directories, and one cordial manufacturer had a large stock of bottles oil which his name and address had been blown. ■ / ''• On tho motion of Cr. Horsleyi'seconded by Cr. Cooper, it was decided to retain the name london street. r Mr A. F. Talbot arid another objected to the change ot name of Bealey street, and pointed .out that no confusion had arisen in connection with the delivery of correspondence. The Mayor mentioned that Bealey street was included in a list forwarded by the Postal authorities, with the request that it should bo altered in order to avoid confusion. The question of re-naming this street was referred back to the By-Laws Com* mittee.' ■./•■'• A petition was rcceive3 against the alteration of tho name of Fitzgerald street. After discussion-it was decided to refer the question of re-naming thia street back to the By-Laws Committee. It was decided to re-name Church street Leydori street, instead of Wesley street. The Hon. H). F. Wigram and others petitioned that tho name of Park terrace should be retained. An amendment that the nam* should be Park terrace, Holleston aven«e, was negatived. The committee's recommendation that Park terrace should be re-named Holleston avenue was and the old name was retained. Cr. Williams wrote suggesting: that Xorth Crescent road. St. Albans, be renamed Trafalgar street. This was referred to the committee. It was derided that the question of making a special order altering the names of certain streets bo postponed for a fortnight.
