CITY COUNCIL.

Thp Christchurch City Council met last night. Present—The Mayor (Mr Allison), and Councillors W. U. Cooper, T. Gapes, J. J. Dougall, A. H. I Wobb, G. Hyde, A. "Williams, C. Taylor. J. Forrester, C. D. Morris, H. J. Otley, T. X. Horsley, Dr. H. T. J. Thackor, and G. W. J. Parsons. The Dunedin Town Clerk wrote forwarding a copy of a resolution referring to the statutory provisions reI garding road widening. The resolnI tion embodied a promised diange an the law, to the effect that mat tors relating to exemptions in .regard to road widening should b*e left to the Absolute discretion of the local authority ' ~ the Council decided to support the Dtinedin Council in the matter. The Electrical Lighting and Power Committee reported that in regard to Mr F. T. M. Kissels scheme for obtaining hydro-eloctric power from Lako Coleridge, it had engaged Mr F v> ■• Marchant, M. Inst C.E., of Timaru, to report. The committee recommended that the tender of Messrs John Chambers and Sons, to provide and completely erect one Babcock and Wilcox boiler, containing 3.550 square fret of heating surface, with superheater, in accordance with epecilication, for £17-13 nett, and the offer of Messrs Mervyn (Stevenson and Co. to supply and erect a Hodgkinson's mechanical stoker for £290 be accepted. The report was adopted. Regarding the new carriers' staml in Lichfield street, the By-laws Committee reported that a letter had been received from occupiers of premises in Lichfield street protesting against the stand for carriers' vehicles recently appointed in the street, and the cominitte had replied that it regretted it could not see its way to recommend the Council to comply with the .request not to persist in the appointment of tho stand. The committee had received a complaint about the practice which was growing up of leaving motorcars standing an the streets for indefinite periods, ana tho committee had communicated with the police, and requested them to prosecute if a breach of the by-laws in that reepect was committed. The committee recommended that the new streete to bo laid out in Linwood ward by Mr Redpath be named Glasgow street and Newcastle street. The report was adoptedIt was stated that the following amount of metal had been supplied for city road purposes during tho current financial year:—Central ward 96054 cubic yards, Sydenham ward 4996 cubic yards, St. Albans ward 4391 cubic yards, Linwood ward 1 3218 cubic yards; total 22,207 cubic yards. A notice of motion by Cr. Dougalli regarding the licensing of motor-car drivers, was to come up for discussion Cr. Dougall, however, asked leave that the motion might be allowed to stand over for four weeks. The Council granted tho leave applied for. Cr. Dougall moved:—"That a return should be prepared showing the income received and the amounts expended in each ward during; tho year ended March 31st last." He said that it might be thought advisable to oonsidrr the question of keeping tho ward accounts separate. The Mayor said the accounts were not at present kept separate, and it would involve an immense amount of work to pick out the information asked for, and the office staff would have to be increased.
