MR F. W. DELAMAIN.
The death of Mr F. AY. Delamain. which occurred yesterday, removes one of the most' notable of tho old-time
racing meji. Mr Dolamain camo to Canterbury in thc early days, and was ff-r some time . member of the Provincial Council. During the early seventies thc deceased gentleman c M'n eel st-ve'ral racehorses, including Templeton, ono of the mo_t popular Lorso-j ever seen on a Cantorbuiy track. and Pungawercuere. With the former he captured the Auckland Cnp, C.J.C. Great Autumn Handicap D.J.C. Handicap, Dunedin Cu#, and Forbiiry Handicap- while Pungawerewere also credited him with a Dunedin Cup and many', lessor events. On giving up the ownership of lion*.*. 'Mr Delamaiu for years officiated as a steward of the Cau-te.-hiiry Jockey Club, a position which h>- filled with every satisfaction. Even up till (jiiitc recently he was a regular attondan; at the Riccarton Meetings, and wa.s a first-class judge- both of racing and bloodstock. Of late years Mr Delamain lived a retired Hfe. Except- with regard to his connection in the early days with :he Provincial Council, he took no prominent part in public matters. The well-known Yaldliurst racing farm was first taken by the late .Mr Delatnain, who named it after bis .uncle's place at Home, tho district being given the same name. He soon established his racing stables, and go. together a string of horses. Sam Haines trained for him for a time: then Monaghan took charge till he left te go to Sydney, and he was followed by Mr R. J. Ma c nn. In January, 1807. Mr Delamaiii's colours first appoareel eui the course. He won the lottery Plate and Criterion .Stakes with Presto, by Peter Flat, his Musician gaining second place in the Maiden Plate. In January, ]860. his Belle of the Lsle ran second iv the Cbristclmreb Plate. Many other horses owned and bred by Mr Dolamain carried his colours with more or less sucee.ss on various courses, but the most lie.ted of his breeding was the grand horse Templeton. hy Traducer—Belle of t!i_ Isle, which was tlio first of Xew Zealand's noted horses that claimed V aid hurst as their birthplace. In 1878 Mr Delamain gave vp 1 racing, and wild Yaldhurst. " I
