The fortnightly meeting of the Lyttclton Borough Council was held last night. I'resent-p-Tho Mayor (Mr J. It. Webb), Councillors J. Cuthrie, \V. liadcliffe, J. T. Norton, W. IV Foster, W. J. Miller, F. J. Pago, J. 11. Collins, U: 11. Rich and SS. C.' Schumacher. The Waimate School Committee wrote thanking the Council for tho courtesy extended to the visiting school children on tho occasion of tho visit to Lyttelton of tho New Zealand. The North Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote inti-, matin? that they were prepared to arrunge i'or a sanitary inspection to be" niado of tho borough at tho rate of £50 per annum. Tho proposal was agreed to, and it was decided to del egato tho Council's powers to the Hospital Board. G. Edgar- wroto drawingattention to the state of tho road from Walker road to his property. Tho To Awamntu Chamber of Commerce wrote -inviting tho co-operation of tho Council in bringing under the notice of tho Government tho urgent need of making provision to minimise the loss of life jat railway level crossings. Potts, at Governors Bay.—, lteferred to tho Finance Committee. "The Diamond Harbour Estates Cpmmittco reported that they had earc- | fully considered upon what lines it ' would bo advisable to proceed in the J development of tho Diamond Harbour I property, and recommended that Mr L. GV Walker be engaged at a salary' of £3 per week to organise a scheme of town-planning for tho Diamond Harbour Estate, and to report within six months on tho following points, viz. :— Tho approximate cost of erecting suitablo dwelling houses; tho probable number of purchasers and lessees of such houses; the prospect of futuro development of tho estate on town-plan-ning lines; the prospect of organising allotment gardens or other co-oporativt I industries; to report at onco as to the advisability and the probablo cost n-nd returns of cropping a portion of the e&tato during the present season; also to assist in tho Diamond Harbour works in such other directions as the Committeo may direct. After somo discussion the report was adopted. The Waterworks Committeo recommended that Mr Webster bo appointed tho'Council's engineer to supervise the erection of the new machinery at the Exeter street pumping station, and that a temporary .appointment be made to fill Mr Webster's place at tho valley pumping station. The recommendations wero agreed to. Tho Estates Committeo recommended that the street known as Gasworks road be re-named Gladstone- quay, and that the portion of Jackson road between tho Bridle path and Hawklmrst road be known as Jackson road. They also recommended that the licensee- of the British Hotel, bo Informix! that the Council hold him resjwnsible. in terms of his lease, to. effect tho necessary alterations to pro■vent tho forfeiture of the premises. Tho report was adopted.
