AVON ROAD BOARD.

The usual meeting of the Board took place on Tuesday, May 28. There were present — The chairman (Mr Lame), and Messrs Homer, Dickenson, Cooper, and Tisch. The minutes of the previous meeting were, read and confirmed. A letter was read from Mr O'Keefe, asking the Board for an interview. The Board decided that the subject on which he wished to see the Board was closed, and he was informed that it could not grant the request. : The Clerk reported that since last meeting he had" received and" placed -to the Board's credit at the bank the following sums:— Rate, £103 18s 9d ; map, 2s 6d ; total, £104 ls 3d. Accounts - passed last meeting had been paid except one. The report was considered. The Clerk requested the Board to be allowed to divert the Main Dram Creek Road, as it would groatly improve it for traffic. After the Board had considered the matter leave was given. ■'- The Board requested Mr Homer to give instructions to the Board's solicitor for a conveyance of the land'bn which the main drain ran through his freehold. Ho agreed to do so. The Clerk placed before the Board the assessed 'values of "the various properties abutting on the road from the Carlton to St. Albans for the purpose of the footpath. It amounted to £2394, and would produce at ls in the £ the sum of £119 14s. After the matter had been considered, the Board resolved that notioe,- .by advertisement, be given of the Board's intention to strike a separate rate of ls in the £ on the said properties, and levy the same. The clerk was directed to prepare a liko statement of the assessed value of properties from St. Albans to Papanui church. Mr Homer said it would be much better to havo the wholo work advertised for, and proposed that a separate rate of Is in the £ be levied for the whole length, from the Carlton to the church. Mr Cooper seconded the motion, which was agreed to, and the clerk directed to givo the proper notice for the whole length. Mr Langdon's request to have an extra length of his road shingled was acceded to, on condition that he paid the amount offered. Messrs Hodge and M'Bratney wrote to the Board with regard to the accounts connected with the New Brighton road. The Board directed the clerk to explain the matter to the men, and say there is a balance coming on tho work. Tho clerk drew tho Board's attention to a trespass committed by Messrs Douglas and S. Al'llroy, in clearing a drain on tho Northcote road without permission. On the motion of Mr Tisch, it was unanimously resolved to prosecute them for clearing a drain which the Board had ordered should not be done, as it injured this district ; also, that the clerk fill in the said drain at once. Tenders were opened for No. 1 contract, new drain. Tho tenders being too high, the Board did not accept any. Tenders were opened for gravelling various roads in the district. Two were accepted.

The Clerk was directed to alter the width and batter of the remaining portion of the new drain, and call for fresh tenders. Mr Clark had an interview with the Board, regarding the Sandhills road by the Waimakariri, and requested the Board to do the work at once. The Chairman informed Mr Clark that, although the Works Committee had been over the ground, they found it necessary to doso again before settling upon the line of road. They had not been able to report at this meeting through stress of business. Mr Tisph inquired of the Board for its title to the gravel pit. The Board produced the conveyance of the land. After passing three accounts, the Board adjourned.
