An ordinary meeting of the above Council was held last evening ; present — His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and all the Councillors. correspondence. Prom the Heathcoto Poundkeeper, asking for appointment as Ranger for the Borough of Sydenham, that he might be enabled to impound straying cattle upon tlie boundaries of the Borough and Heathcote distriot. Letter received, and request declined. From Mr G. H. Hewitt, Spreydon, urging tlie desirability of the proposed annexation of a portion of that district to the Borough of Sydenham. Eeferred to the Works Committee for report at next meeting. From Harper and Co, intimating that tlie Council would be held responsible if any encroachment was made upon the land occupied by Mr W. White, senr., (under (ease from the Government), abutting upon Hazeldean road. The letter was received. From property-holders on Southey and Longfellow streets, agreeing to give land necessary for widening those streets. Referred to Works Committee. Prom property - holders in Shakspere road, petitioning the Council to levy a special rate in the portion of the Borough aifeoted, to raise the amount necessary (.£lOl ss), for widening the road in question. Action for striking a separate rate, as requested, to be taken, and work proceeded with. From the Borough Council of South Invercargill, covering a series of resolutions re carriers' licenses, and requesting co-operation in procuring an amendment in the Act. The alterations suggested by the South Invercargill Council were approved. Circular from Colonial Treasurer, re Imperial Institute proposals. Received. Prom Messrs M'intyre and Small, requesting permission of Council to transfer leases held for the Council of portion of its reserves at Ashburton. Eeferred to Finance Committee for report. report op works committee. " Your Committee begs to report as follows: — The Canterbury Tramway Company having failed to co_tply with the notice served upon it, requiring the Company to repair the roadways on which the tramway lines are laid, the Committee has instructed the Council's Foreman of Works to carry out the work, and to charge the cost to the Company. An agreement has been signed by all the owners of property in Southey street and Longfellow etreet, agreeing to dedicate land to straighten Southey street and make it a full chain in width, and to widen Longfellow street to three-quarters of a chain. Mr W. B. Campbell bas transferred his contract for supply of gravel for asphalt to Mr J. E. Bashford, and' the Committee will approve of the transfer when the arrangement of the transfer have been completed." The report was received and adopted. FINANCE REPORT. The Finance Committee reported as follows: — Receipts since last meeting, £511 17a 3d; accounts recommended for payment, £864 Is 2d; credit balance at Bank, general and interest account, JBl 134

9a 8d ; loan account debit, JBIOB2 4a lld ; fixed deposit, .£14,000. The Committee intended to summon anothor batch of defaulters forthwith. The report was received and adopted. REPORT OF THE BATH COMMITTEE. " Your Committee begs to report that it has conferred with the Borough School Committee on the question of erecting a swimming bath, and finds that a suitable bath, that could also be used for fire prevention purposes, can be erected on a site adjoining the public school grounds' for about -C-00. As the bath would be of great utility and convenience to the large number of children attending the school, and to the publio generally, the Committee recommends that the Council agree to erect the bath, provided tbat the Education Board contribute one half the cost, say, about -C2OO, on condition that the Bchool children be allowed free use of the bath during stated hours, the Council's proportion not to exceed £200." The report, which led to a long discussion, was adopted. After the transaction of some unimportant business, the Council adjourned.
