DRAINAGE BOARD.

An ordinary meeting of tiie Christchurch District Drainage Board was held yesterday evening ; present — Messrs Vincent (Chairman), Boag, Hosking, and Barns. FINANCIAI..The Secretary and Treasurer's report was as follows :— "Amount of rates received since last meeting, £234,2 8s Sd ; received from other sources, JBBS 5s 9d. Expenditure since last meeting £363 Oa 2d; interest on overdraft, £262 Ss; interest on debentures, £6120; total, £6745 3s 2d; bank overdraft, £584 10s 2d." The following statement, showing amount of rates collected in each district to Oct. 25, 1887, was submitted :— - '

CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were read : — From the Sydenham Borough Council, offering to collect the Board's rates at a commission of seven per cent, which, amount the Council had retained. It was decided to refer the question of commission to the Auditor-General for his arbitration. From the same, asking that repairs to the Kingsley street sewer might be put in hand at once. The letter was received. From the same, asking for remissions of certain rates for 1886. Referred to the Finance Committee with power to act. From the Avon Road Board, asking for payment of £30, subsidy for clearing the Styx. Referred to the Finance Committee to report. From the Riccarton Road Board and Mr J. Deans, asking for the enlargement bf the culverts at Washbourne's drain and Jackeon's road. Referred to the Works Committee to roport. From the Spreydon Road Board, agreeing to collect the drainage rate at the terms offered by the Board, viz., 3. per cent. From lir E. Q. Wright, requesting the Board to reduce the water level of Free's Creek, which he considered had been raised by the operations of the Drainage Board. Referred to the Works Committee. From Mr C. Fraser, accepting JJIO as compensation for land taken by the Board. From Mr H. Hof t, asking the Board to pay JSI2 33 3d, balance of costs in the case of Fereday v. himself. It was decided to pay the at-ount. From Mr F. J. Hitching-, applying for a pipelayer's license. The request was granted. From the Board's solicitors, expressing the opinion that the Roman Catholic school properties were liable for drainage rates. It was decided to instruct the City Council to take steps to recover the arrears of rates due. WORKS COMI«IT*_fBE. The Works Committee recommended that the Linwood Town Board be requested to put in a -mall floodgate where the side channel water entered the outfall drain in Cashel street. That the St Albans Borough Council be informed that the Board cannot acknowledge any liability in respect to the flooding of Mr Rush's property on the Abberley road, but would see if steps could be taken to prevent flooding in future. Tbat, with reference to the overflow drain opposite Mr Redpath's premises in Tuam street, Linwood, the offer of the Linwood Town Board be. accepted, viz., that the Drainage Board contribute JE3sin cash towards altering the drain, and provide £20 worth of nine-inch pipes, if the local Board contributes the sum of £110; the work to be done by the local Board subject to the approval of the Drainage Board's Engineer. That owners who have covered in Jackson's Creek Bhould receive notice to put in eound and substantial culverts to the satisfaction Qf the Board's Engineer. The report was approved. After passing .accounts, the, -Board adjourned.
