♦ An ordinary meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council waa held last evening; present— The Mayor (Mr W. Jacques), Councillors Brown, Taylor, Budd, Jones, Hadfield, Muffett, Samuels and Clifford. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Winny, Smith, Langdown and Forrester. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts since last meeting had been J8383 3s 7d. Accounts amounting to .£457 10a 3d were recommended for payment. The balances of accounts were :— Credit separate account, £403. 15a 8d; interest, £485 Is; loan, £5348 2s Id; total, £6236 18s 9d. The debit on the general account was £2466 15s 6d. The report was adopted. EEPOETS. The Worts Committee reported, in reference to the letter from Mr Cox, that instructions had been given for the prosecution of all persons allowing cattle to wander on the footpaths. The petition of Mr D. Neave and others for a new street to connect Montreal Street' with Harper Street had been held over for further information, as arranged with the deputation at last meeting. The report was adopted. The report of the Beserves Committee on the annual visit to the reserves at Cairnbrae was read and referred to the Works Committee with power to act. The report on the Drainage Board conference was held over. CORBEBPONDENCE. Letters were read and dealt with as follow: — ■ ■-..■■.'-■ From the Mount Hutt Boad Board, stating that the Board intended taking, under the Public Works Act, an acre of 'the Council's reserve at Cairnbrae for a gravel pit. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Jb'rom Mesßrß Harman and Stevens, stating that they could not agree to the Council's terms respecting a new street in Rural Section 62, therefore the proposal mußt be considered withdrawn. They requested the Council to complete the formation of Thackeray Street. The Works Committee was empowered to act. THE BICYCLE TfiACK. Mr J. W. Smith waited on the Council regarding a petition he had presented to the Mayor, asking that a public meeting should be held to consider the question of the bicycle track. It was pointed Out that many persons had signed the' requisition under a misapprehension. .-, Councillor Muffett moved that the public meeting should be held. The motion was not seconded, and the matter dropped. Mesßrß A. M. Ollivier, L. A. Cuff and Dr Jennings waited on the Council as a deputation from the Lancaster Park Company'regarding the proposal to lay down an asphalt cycling track at Sydenham Pack. They took exception to the Conncil spending public money on such a work in , opposition to a private, enterprise. Tuey stated that their .company intended put- : ting down a track There would thus be two 1 tracks, 1 and .neither of them " would pay. The company had. been awaiting details from the Cycling Clabs> or the work would have been undertaken sooner. , Messrs Eyre, Waller, Myhre and pates, representing the Pioneer Bicycle Club, stated that their club and tho Christchurch Cycling Club were prepared to guarantee part of the coat of a track, such as that which had been shown them in a plan and explained. After some discussion Councillor Taylor moved and Councillor Jones seconded— " That upon a satisfactory guarantee being completed by the Pioneer and Christchurch Cycling Clubs,in fulfilment of the promises contained in their letters, dated May 7, the construction of the cycling track on Sydenham Park be proceeded with forthwith." . The motion was carried, Councillor Muffett alone dissenting. It was decided that the Park Committee Bhould meet the representatives of the Cycling Clubs to arrange details. THE UNEMPLOYED. With regard to the unemployed, it was \ decided to write to the Heathcote Boad Board respecting the widening of Tennyeon ' Street. The meeting then adjourned till 7.15 • this evening^
