OBITUARY.

JAMES TOEEENS. Another old and well-known Canterbury settler passed away at two o'clock this morning. Mr Torrens arrived in Lyttelton in the ship Brothers Pride in December, 1863. He took up land in the Spreydon district, in what is now known as Tankerville, where he has resided ever since. For many years he farmed the property successfully, but of later years he has turned his attention to the breeding of draught horses. He always took an active interest in matters agricultural, and was one of the skilled mon in Canterbury in anything appertaining to horses, and was frequently consulted in cases when a veterinary surgeon was hot available. Mr Torrens lias been, in failing health lately, but was only seriously ill for about a week, and succumbed to an attack of apoplexy. He leaves a widow and grown-up family. __^_________
