Keeping Omitm — Ah Yee and Lun Chun were charged by the Commissioner of Customs that they did knowingly keep and conceal prohibited and uncustomed goods, to wit, opium suitable for smoking. Mr Widdwwson appeared for the> Commissioner and Mr Hoban ior accused. An adjournment was aslc^d ior, on account of the difficulty in getting an interpreter who did not come from the same district as accused. Mr Hoban "opposed the application, ' but the case was adjourned- sine die.— The .accused were further charged that, on or about Dea 12, '1902, at Christckurch, they "did import into ( the colony o'pium suit-able for smoking without having a permit to do so- from the Commissioner of Customs. Mr Cresswell appeared for the Commissioner and Mr Hoban for accused. Mr Hoban asked for an adjournment to enable his clients to get books and witnesses from Wellington. Solicitors on each side having been 'heard, an adjournment was granted till Dec. 37, when a further adjournment would be gjranted. Alleged Theft. — James Thompson Gow, a returned trooper of the Tenth Contingent, was charged with, stealing the sum of £6 from W. Black. Mr Harvey appeared for accused. Rose was charged with stealing a quantity of stamps, a rolled gold watch, a seal and other property > valued at £200> the property of Charles Griffiths Fryer. Mr M'Gonnell appeared for accused^ The police asked for a} remand, as a. number of stamps Md been' found in possession of- accused and further inquiries were necessary. Dktjnkenness.— A first offender was fined 5s and cos^s. , By-law Cases;— Thomas Claridge and Frederick J£alkmnn were each fined 5s and costs, and John Sutherland 10s and costs, for allowing horses to wander. — William ""Shaw, for the same offence, was ordered to pay costs, A as he had been fined the previous day .—Stewart Pollard and James Rogers were each fined 10s and cost* for riding bicycles on footpaths. — James Clifford Was fined 5s and costs for ' riding a bicycle without a lights and for a similar offence Charles Igglesden" was fined 10s and costs.— William Porter, for furious driving in the city, was fined 6s and costs.— Buraip Granger was fined 10s and costs for leaving a vehicle unattended for more than five minutes, and John Martin, a cabman, on a similar charge, was remanded till Jan. 9. — John Lane was charged with having let a hackney cab stand in a place which was not a proper cab-stand, and the case was adjourned till Jan. 9.— Ernest Pope, for whom Mr Donnelly appeared, was fined 5s and costs for throwing stones. — Reginald Adams -was fined 103 and costs for discharging a pea-rifle afc New Brighton.— Thomas Codling was charged, under Section 16 of the Police Offences Act, -with working at his calling within, view of the public in Swales's ■Road, Richmond, on Sunday, Nov. 30. Constable Flewellyn gave evidence of having seen accused hoeing potatoes. The accused said he kept Saturday as his Sabbath. He was a oarpenter, and never worked oh Sunday to the annoyance of others. The case was dismissed, as Cne Bench did not think it came within the statute. School Attendance. — For failing to send children to school, the following were fined, with costs : — Charles Hawkins ss, W^ Perbam ss, F. Reed ss, T. Summerton ss, and 5s on a seoond charge, R. Tetter 4s.
