The Australian mail steamer reached the Bluff at 5.30 this inomingf. Swimming "Association -Executive meets at the Clarendon to-morrow night. The Floral Fete Committee will meet in the City Council Chamber to-morrow night. Nominations for the Mayoral elections at Sydenham, Woolston and New Brighton close to-morrow. : Tho severity of the winter has compelled the Greek Frontier Delimitation Commission to suspend operations. American newspapers consider that Lord Salisbury's warning to France in regard to West Africa, has been given none too soon. Austria, France and Germany are arranging a conference with a view to securing the abolition or reduction of the sugar bounties. The Orakzais have practically accepted the terms of peace offered by General Lockhart. The A kali Khels are offering to submit. The Afridis aro thus isolated and disunited. . . The Governor and party left for Wellington by the Government steamer Tutanekai yesterday. Before his departure his Excellency sent a letter to the Mayor of Christchureh, thanking the City Council and citizens for the reception accorded to him. The "horse fiend" is still at work. On Friday night a valuable trotting stallion ■belonging t& Mr J. Hbrler, at Webb's Eoad, Riccartdil; wits -poisoned, but may, however, recover, and on Saturday night two other horses, belonging to Mr E. Hack, of Eussley; Riccartdii, were poisoned. Both have succumbed. The cricket match between Stoddart's team and the New South Wales 'eleven was continued j'esterday. The first innings of the Englishmen closed for 335 runs, or twenty-four ahead of the score of their opponents, and in their second innings the New South Wales team have lost nine wickets for 259.
