ODJ,— We, the undersigned Burgesses of the £3 City of Christohurch, having viewed with admiration the manner in which you contested the recent Parliamentary election, desire you to offer yourself as a candidate for the Mayoralty, and in the event of your consent, will pledge ourselves to give you our support and influence.— Tours, &c, (Signed by 227 ratepayers ) To the Gentlemen signiDg the Bequißition. Gemilem bk,— W bile recognising tb c great honot tr you have conferred upon me, I feel tbat I must dadine upon this occasion, as I consider that Mr Xouisson has a pre-emptive claim to the Mayoral chair, on the following grounds:— (I) That he has d »voted such a largo amonnt of time to tho service of this City ; (2) That he has always tthoue as ono of tho leading men in the Council ; and (3) that in tho contest oC last year he polled a substantial number of votes,- being only live votes below the winner. Taking these facts into consideration, I think it would ba unbecoming on my part to oppose Mr Louisson, even if I wore assured of so large a measure of support as would lead to success. I would like also to state that, having set my foot upon tho political platform, I desire to continue upjn it i aud should any Parliamentary vacancy occur within Canterbury, I trust 1 shall receive a similar •solunteered support as I have been honoured with on this occasion. Thanking sinceroly the gentlemen who have signed the requisition, and expressing tny grateful feelings for the kindly remarks contained therein. I will conclude with the best wishes for the future prosperity of our City.— l Tours faithlully, 57b5 EDEN GKOBGK
